Faced with nearly having to repeat their 400-run performance to win the game, England proceeded to rack up their highest second-innings total — with only the weather preventing an even better and possibly winning score.
Actually, the rain conspired with the dreaded Duckworth-Lewis Method to stymie England’s inspiring run-chase. The sides played several minutes through a steady drizzle, but when the umpires finally called for the pitch to be covered at about 8:20 p.m. local time, England stood just 54 runs away from the target with 37 balls to play.
That would have been a rate of 8.76 runs per over, a tough but very attainable goal.
But 45 minutes later, when players came back on to the field, Duckworth-Lewis had adjusted the requirements to 34 runs from just 13 deliveries — an almost impossible rate of nearly 16 per over. England finished at 365/9, 13 runs shy of the Duckworth-Lewis adjusted target.
Nonetheless, the combined 763-runs scored on the day was the most ever for a one-day cricket match in England, by more than 100 runs. With a good batting track expected at the Ageas Bowl Sunday, fans are likely to be treated to another thrilling explosion of scoring.
