Melissa Gilbert’s net worth could be suffering as the Little House on the Prairie alum is in some serious debt. Best known for her role as Laura Ingalls in the classic Michael Landon TV series, the IRS says she owes them over $360,000 in taxes.
The Internal Revenue Service has officially filed a lien against the former child actress, and Gilbert claims it was due to a “perfect storm” of financial problems. The recent recession, a widening gap in her acting career, and divorce have all been hard on her, she says. With plans to move to a log cabin she calls “our own little house in the big woods” with her family, it seems clear how much trouble she’s having with money.
After Gilbert explained the situation to Howell native Jenee Gregor, the latter says it makes sense.
“I just moved back here from California myself, and I know how expensive it can be. I wish her all the best.”
“She probably made all her money when she was young, so I can understand.”
Despite Melissa Gilbert’s net worth being affected by her financial situation and growing debt to the IRS, she is still attempting to proverbially keep her head above the water. In her recent years, she’s tried to make a comeback competing on Dancing with the Stars and had several TV appearances. She has been seen in five episodes of ABC’s Secrets and Lies, and one episode of NBC’s The Night Shift.

The 51-year-old Little House on the Prairie star hasn’t seen any major projects since the Hallmark Channel’s The Christmas Pageant, and hasn’t had any recent big screen breaks. Her biggest films so far include Revenge of the Nerds and Field of Dreams, though that won’t help Melissa Gilbert’s net worth now.
Gilbert has also negotiated a deal with the tax authorities to pay off what she owes, according to USA Today, though it could take a few years if she can’t make her film career or newfound career as a writer take off soon.
“I’ve set up an installment plan to fully pay off my debt and will continue to work as hard as I can to erase this debt and dig myself out of this hole. I am absolutely positive that I can do it.”
As the actress prepares to move to a log cabin about a half hour drive northeast of Detroit, Melissa Gilbert’s net worth appears to be dropping, and as she prepares for book signings on her new cook book, she isn’t giving up.
