Ellie Goulding And Ariana Grande Tag Team Misogynists

It seems that British singer Ellie Goulding and fellow recording artist Ariana Grande are heartily sick of the way they are defined by both the press and by the music industry. Both Ellie and Ariana have spoken out this week to slam the hacks who only seem to define these successful women in terms of who they have or have not dated. By speaking out, Ellie and Ariana have highlighted an age-old problem and won the approval of another star, Taylor Swift.

The Mirror reported last week that Goulding was mightily fed up with the constant rumors about her love life. It was rumored last year that Ellie had been at the center of a pop love triangle. It was said that Ellie was in a relationship with Ed Sheeran, and cheated on him with One Direction star Niall Horan. The story came about when a tabloid newspaper printed that Ed Sheeran had confirmed that his song “Don’t” was about Ellie Goulding. The story was totally false, and the tabloid later printed a retraction, but only after many other news outlets had run the story.

Goulding admitted that she had dated Horan, but had never dated Ed.

“I did go on a few dates with Niall, but I was never in a relationship with Ed, I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing.”

Goulding went on to explain her frustrations about the way female artists are portrayed.

“I find it so frustrating that female musicians are constantly defined by the men they have or haven’t dated. It’s something I’ve talked about with Taylor [Swift] a lot. She definitely feels that. She gets bothered by it.

It’s like, you can be a great artist, you can write great songs, but the thing that everyone is going to talk about is some relationship they think you have had or not had. It’s definitely something we both think happens to female artists over male artists.”

Ariana Grande is most definitely in agreement with Ellie. Just a couple of days after Goulding’s comments, Ariana took to Twitter to vent her frustrations over the exact same issues. In her case, Ariana’s frustration boiled out in a long message that highlighted that she is fed up with being defined as rapper “Big Sean’s” ex-girlfriend.

“[T]he double standard and misogyny are ever present, A girl can be friends with something with a d**k and not hop on it. I’m tired of needing to be linked to a guy. I’m not Big Sean’s ex, I’m not Niall’s possible girl. I’m Ariana Grande.”

Taylor Swift was quick to support Grande. What do Inquisitr readers think about this issue? Are Ellie Goulding and Ariana Grande correct? Are women still defined in terms of the men they date?
