First Official Synopsis Revealed For ‘Independence Day 2’

Sequels can end up being hit or miss, depending on how things go or what the studio is trying to accomplish. Well, after almost 20 years, Independence Day 2 finally has some information out about it, and it’s the first official synopsis that explains a little more detailing what the film will be about.

The first Independence Day back in 1996 was a huge summer blockbuster and paved the way for great careers for Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, and others. Yes, they already were stars, but this made them even bigger.

Screen Crush has stated that this may not be the official synopsis, but it is the first bit of info on it. More is expected from Fox on Independence Day 2 and other films during next week’s Licensing Expo taking place in Las Vegas.

“After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

We don’t know a whole lot else about the movie so far, but we are aware of a few things.

  • Will Smith will not be returning to reprise his role from the first film.
  • The events of the sequel will take place 20 years after those in the original film.
  • The 20-year time difference may not be the same for the aliens as it is for humans on Earth.

Director Roland Emmrich has talked in depth about the film for a few years now and revealed some info that may or may not still be in place. As the film has officially gone into production, anything could have changed since he talked a lot about Independence Day 2 back in 2013.

It was then that he said that traveling through space is done through wormholes and that may make up for the time change in aliens and humans. As he said, “…for aliens, it cold take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

Finally, there is some information on Independence Day 2 and it opens in theaters on June 24, 2016. The film stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher, Joey King, Sela Ward, Brett Spiner, Vivica A. Fox, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Judd Hirsch.
