President Obama: Ronald Reagan Would Have Lost Republican Primary Today

President Obama

Washington D.C. – President Barack Obama said today in an interview that if Ronald Reagan was running for President in this years election, he “could not get through a Republican primary today.”

Obama said during a question-and-answer session with newspaper editors on Tuesday that Reagan was forced to make tough decisions about the economy and the deficit during his Presidency. Reagan approved both tax increases and spending cuts on his watch.

President Obama was criticizing the Republican field for not having the courage to raise taxes in order to cut the deficit. In the Republicans defense President Obama has not proposed any spending cuts either.
More of the exchange is below:

MR. SINGLETON: “Thank you, Mr. President. We appreciate so much you being with us today. I have some questions from the audience, which I will ask — and I’ll be more careful than I was last time I did this.”
“Republicans have been sharply critical of your budget ideas as well. What can you say to the Americans who just want both sides to stop fighting and get some work done on their behalf?”

THE PRESIDENT: “Well, I completely understand the American people’s frustrations, because the truth is that these are eminently solvable problems. I know that Christine Lagarde is here from the IMF, and she’s looking at the books of a lot of other countries around the world. The kinds of challenges they face fiscally are so much more severe than anything that we confront — if we make some sensible decisions.”

“So the American people’s impulses are absolutely right. These are solvable problems if people of good faith came together and were willing to compromise. The challenge we have right now is that we have on one side, a party that will brook no compromise. And this is not just my assertion. We had presidential candidates who stood on a stage and were asked, “Would you accept a budget package, a deficit reduction plan, that involved $10 of cuts for every dollar in revenue increases?” Ten-to-one ratio of spending cuts to revenue. Not one of them raised their hand.”

“Think about that. Ronald Reagan, who, as I recall, is not accused of being a tax-and-spend socialist, understood repeatedly that when the deficit started to get out of control, that for him to make a deal he would have to propose both spending cuts and tax increases. Did it multiple times. He could not get through a Republican primary today.”

Reagan has a legacy so distorted by the Conservative idolization of him that we may never have a clear picture of the real man behind the television set beyond the elaborate myth now concocted around him. Did he really rid the world of commie scum? Did destroy or save our economy? Check out my portrait of The Gipper in commemoration of the Reagan Centennial and help me figure it out on my artist’s blog at

Obama is so disengenuous in his statements that it is pathetic the way he lies and distorts. First of all, the question posed in the debate where no one raised their hand was "Would you support a $10 decrease in spending for every dollar of tax increase"? That is markedly different than what you read here. Obama is a liar. If he would wake up tomorrow and be honest, he would tell us all that he wishes for our country to become a socialist state. Actions speak louder than words, and if we had REAL JOURNALISTS that were devoted to telling the truth, Obama couldn't get by with these lies.

You are a real asshole. Reagan had to spend the money he spent to win the cold war, yes we did WIN the war idiot. The Soviet Union collapsed because they were trying to keep up with us militarily. You cannot become a super power without the power to back it up. If Carter had won in 1980 we could very well be speaking Russian right now. You don't have a clue. Carter left our military in shambles when he was defeated in the landslide victory that you obviously haven't gotten over. Carter left this country in aguably worse shape than Obama is leaving it now. You are sooooo wrong in your assumption of Reagan, even when the facts are there to back it up. You liberals are enough to make me sick. Liberalism is a Cancer on Society.
