Gwyneth Paltrow Cries Misogyny When It Comes To Comparisons Between ‘Goop’ And Other Female-Led Brands

Gwyneth Paltrow recently spoke her mind in an interview for Time’s latest issue. The Oscar winning actress, who has experienced additional massive success after founding Goop, relayed her views when it comes to the public and media drawing comparisons between her own brand and those of other successful actresses.

In the interview, as Us Weekly notes, Paltrow was asked if she ever checks out Blake Lively’s lifestyle brand, Preserve. Gwyneth’s response was poignant and, no doubt, surprising.

“This is a very interesting question, because I wonder if George Clooney would be asked about Puff Daddy’s ancillary liquor line. I’m fascinated how the media in particular are so confounded by entrepreneurial women doing something outside of their box. I wrestle with it. I feel there’s something slightly misogynistic about it.”

Seeing as so many female actresses have coincidentally launched lifestyle brands in a short span of time, the interviewer is certainly justified in asking the question which caused Paltrow to ramble about double standards. However, her ramblings do make a case. Paltrow went on to distinguish the vast differences between her own company and those of other A-list actresses who she considers friends. She stated that although Reese Witherspoon’s brand, for instance, Draper James, is somewhat similar to her own, Reese’s “has retail,” as opposed to her own, which does not.

Paltrow admits to feeling “slightly offended” when it comes to the “generalizations” made between herself and women such as Blake Lively, Reese Witherspoon, and Jessica Alba, noting the fact that “Yes, there are similarities. But there aren’t stories in Time written saying ‘Wow, look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, who did x,y, and z.'”

Witherspoon launched her first lifestyle website, Draper James, last month.

“Our businesses have similarities, but hers has retail,” Paltrow noted. “People are grasping at straws to tie us together and I get it, because it makes a good story, but I’m slightly offended by this sort of generalization that happens with myself and Jessica and Reese and Blake.”

Although Gwyneth is often annoyed by the constant need of the media to lump her in with other brands that have been spear-headed by notable actresses, she does not hesitate to show her support and excitement for her friends and their brands.

“I don’t know Blake Lively, and I don’t know if Jessica and Reese know each other—I’m friends with both of them and I speak to both of them and I want to do everything I can to support their businesses. I’m not articulating it well, because I haven’t completely worked out what it is, but I feel very proud when Jessica was on the cover of Forbes. I think that’s amazing. You can quantitatively say, ‘Look what she’s done, she’s been able to conceive of a business and scale it to that size, in that amount of time.’ But we have such different businesses.'”
