Iggy Azalea Tour Cancelled: Brooklyn MC Takes Credit For ‘Great Escape’ Disaster

Iggy Azalea has racheted quite a few enemies since ascending to the top of the female hip-hop game — and you can add underground Brooklyn MC Queen Blizzy to the list. The female rapper also claims that she’s the one responsible for sinking Iggy’s “Great Escape” tour.

According to the Daily Beast, Ty Black, who goes under the moniker Queen Blizzy, started a grassroots movement in line with the #BlackLivesMatter protests to help shut down Azalea’s tour. She claims the Facebook page she started was immediately flagged and helped contribute to the “Great Escape” tour demise.

“It was up for one day, and [Azalea] changed her tour dates. Somebody flagged it after I had more than 4,000 followers.”

Her reasoning for doing so was the often-heard criticism made by rapper Azealia Banks that Iggy Azalea has appropriated black culture for profit — a claim still being made today. The Huffington Post, for example, is the most recent news outlet to pile on Iggy for her apparent use — deliberate or not — of black culture in her music and in public.

“Culture reflects the core of a person’s being. It defines their experiences and perspective. It is inextricably linked to social, political and economic realities. It is not something you can just ‘put on’ like a funny hat or the lip balm you conspicuously sponsor in that booty video with J.Lo.”

It remains to be seen (and kind of hard to quantify) whether the Azealia Banks backlash or the grass roots movement by Queen Blizzy is ultimately responsible for the Iggy Azalea tour cancellation. More than likely, the reported low ticket sales to date are the most likely culprit.

Regardless, the circumstances all add up to one thing: things are not right in Iggy Azalea land. Forbes also argues that the colossal embarrassment is a sign that Iggy just isn’t ready for prime time, despite the popularity of her music.

“There’s so much more going on here and much of it adds up to Azalea not being ready for prime time. I have reached out to promoters to see how Azalea’s tickets were selling and haven’t heard back yet, but this is clearly a matter of pushing an artist too fast too soon and capitalizing on her possibly flash-in-the-pan success instead of trying to build a long-lasting career. Her 2014 New Classic headlining tour focused primarily on clubs and then theaters. This was too big a leap.”

And now we’ll see if Iggy Azalea’s next leap is out of the public eye forever.
