Google Brings Users Into An 8-Bit World With Google Maps Quest [Video]

Want to go on a quest? Want to follow in the footsteps of Link? Google has just unveiled its latest product Google Maps Quest.

The new mapping tool finally gives you the map you’ve been looking for, complete with stunning retro 8-bit graphics.

Tatsuo Nomura, a Google software engineer, writes in a post on Google’s official Maps blog:

“With Google Maps 8-bit, you can do all the things you already do on regular Google Maps… Search for famous landmarks and sites around the world. Take an epic journey with 8-bit Street View. Get detailed directions to avoid dangerous paths, and battle your way through a world of powerful monsters and mystic treasures.”

Google also released a video which shows users how to properly use Google Maps Quest. The new tool should be used with a game cartridge, but to simplify things, Google has also put a little button in the upper right hand corner of the Google Maps page. Just click on Quest and you can start your 8-bit adventure.

Google said that they will be releasing an NES Google Maps Quest game (the first for Nintendo in 17-years) and that a version is already being created for Gameboy. Of course, tomorrow is April Fools’ Day and Google does have a history of pulling jokes on the internet. So I wouldn’t hold my breath for a new game.
