Charlize Theron As Captain Marvel? The Director Is Even More Surprising [Rumor]

A rumor is circulating on the Internet that Charlize Theron is a “favorite” to play Ms. Marvel (aka Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers). The studio is also courting a high-profile to be the director.

The rumor started at OK! Magazine and got added into a story on Yahoo. In summary, Charlize Theron has become close friends with Angelina Jolie, and that bond might lead the two into the first Marvel superhero movie with a female as the lead. The Captain Marvel movie is already slated for 2018, but not much else has been confirmed.

OK! Magazine’s unnamed source explained the behind-the-scenes details from Marvel Studios.

“Marvel has been courting Angie to direct the project and Charlize is a clear fan favorite for the starring role. If Charlize were to get the part, Angie would almost certainly sign on to work with her new pal.”

That little snippet set off a firestorm of Internet speculation and early critiques.

Nevertheless, rumors are just rumors, and this one should be taken with a grain of salt.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, other rumors have been claiming that Captain Marvel has already been cast, and has been for some time. The heroine was even reportedly supposed to make an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron — which never happened.

Plus, there’s a long line of contenders for the role, including Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, and Natalie Dormer. Katheryn Winnick also has growing fan support for taking the role after proving her movie fighting abilities on the popular History Channel show Vikings, playing Lagertha.

Still, Charlize Theron has proven her action movie chops, too. She starred in the critically acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road, and let’s not forget, she also played Aeon Flux in the not-so-critically acclaimed movie adaptation of Peter’s Chung’s cult classic cartoon.

Angelina Jolie is less proven, at least in the director’s chair. Her last directing project was the 2014 Unbroken. She has yet to lead a CG-filled action film that’s comparable to Marvel’s superhero blockbusters. Jolie has worked in a similar setting with the film Maleficent, though — also packed with CG and its fair share of fantasy action.

In the end, the rumor might just a be a leak to see what the Internet audience thinks of Theron as Captain Marvel, and Angelina Jolie as director. So what do you think? Can Charlize Theron-Angelina Jolie duo pull off a good superhero movie?
