A draw would allow England to claim the series win and end New Zealand’s two-year unbeaten string of Test matches.
In New Zealand’s monumental second innings, eight of the Black Caps cleared the ropes for six, a first in Test match history. New Zealand also set a record run rate for a team that totaled more than 800 runs in a Test, averaging 4.92 per over, topping the 4.6 recorded by Australia in a test against visiting South African in 2012.
The previous record for a fourth-innings chase was set by West Indies against Australia, playing in Antigua back in 2003.
When play resumes on Day Five, England will have all 10 of its wickets to spend, with Alastair Cook and Adam Lyth at bat for 18 and 24 not out, respectively.
