‘GTA V’ Boss Claims That Full Power Of Consoles Not Yet Realized

For those who play GTA V on console, you might want to take note of what Rockstar’s CEO Strauss Zelnick said concerning the PS4 and Xbox One this week.

According to GameSpot, the GTA V boss was speaking to the 43rd Annual Technology, Media and Telecom Conference this past week, talking about his company’s current-gen titles and how they utilize the Xbox One and PS4 system resources.

“We have yet to see entirely what the technology can allow. We’ve had a couple releases for new-gen, but I don’t think we remotely have seen what can be done, and that’s super exciting. And that speaks to many of our titles; hopefully all of our titles, ultimately.”

It is worth pointing out that GTA V is a port of a game from the last-gen era of consoles, but even GTA V doesn’t hit the same benchmark as the PC platform in terms of the game’s performance. GTA V on Xbox One and PS4 is locked at 30 frames-per-second while the PC can run the game at double the framerate (or more if your rig can handle it) as well as four-times the 1080p resolution seen on the new-gen hardware.

However, Andrew House from Playstation is optimistic gamers will see a leap in terms of performance as the life-cycle of the new-gen consoles continues.

“I think it will be a show where we see the next generation of hardware really start to deliver great content and experiences that, if not take full advantage of the platform, take a lot more advantage than we’ve seen before.”

This is in stark contrast to what CD Projekt Red said about their recently released title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Like GTA V, The Witcher 3 runs at a lesser framerate and on Xbox One it also runs at a lesser native resolution than its PC counterpart. Speaking to IGN, The Witcher 3 said that their game was “fairly close” to maxing out the hardware in its early development.

GTA V is still one of the largest games in terms of popularity on the market to date. The PC has proven to not only be the best version of the game thus far, but also with the inclusion of mods the PC version of GTA V affords players plenty of unique opportunities to explore and experience San Andreas.

Whether GTA V or any current game maxes out the consoles, it will be interesting to see whether the gap between platforms continues to widen based on future games.
