Colbie Caillat Engaged: Singer Confirms With ‘Friends’ Reference
It’s official — singer Colbie Caillat is engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Justin Young.
The 30-year-old “Try” singer confirmed the news of her recently changed relationship status on Twitter Friday. What made the announcement even more special and romantic was that Young apparently used a familiar Friends reference to pop the question.

Even though Colbie Caillat did not announce the engagement on Twitter until Friday, she may have sparked the curiosity of her Facebook fans and social media followers on Thursday with another posted photo.
In the caption, Caillat is thanking everyone for their sweet birthday messages and referring to her hair — which was blowing all over the place in the pic. However, if you pay close attention to the bottom of the picture, she is also indirectly showcasing her shiny engagement ring.
The “lobster” reference was first made in Season 2, Episode 14 of Friends — “The One With the Prom Video.”
In the episode, Ross (David Schwimmer) was discouraged over the possibility of never being able to turn his longtime love for Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) into an actual relationship with her. To encourage him, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) shared her “lobster” theory — which basically explained that the two of them were destined to be together.
“Hang in there. It’s going to happen… She’s your lobster… Come on, you guys. It’s a known fact that lobsters fall in love and mate for life. You know what? You can actually see old lobster couples walkin’ around their tank, you know, holding claws.”
The “lobster” reference popped back up later during the same episode after the gang watched the iconic prom video where Rachel realized that Ross was willing to be her prom date. Moments after Rachel discovers what he did that night, the two of them passionately kiss and Phoebe reminds everyone that she was right.
Personally, Colbie Caillat and Justin Young have been in a relationship for many years. Professionally, Young is a guitarist in her band.
Nearly four years ago, Caillat opened up about their relationship in a 2011 interview with Us Weekly.
“We have everything in common. He helps me with my music and guitar-playing, and we warm up together. We go everywhere together. It is like having your best friend with you, so I really love it.”
During the same interview, Caillat mentioned that they were not rushing their relationship. However, she also stated that she would be “very excited” and “would be happy” if he proposed. Just like Ross and Rachel eventually ended up together, Colbie Caillat apparently has finally found her “lobster” once and for all.
