Spike Lee Retweets George Zimmerman’s Incorrect Address, Elderly Couple Now Fear For Their Lives

Justice in the case of Trayvon Martin is not going to come through vigilantes. It’s not going to come through violence. An elderly couple, who had nothing to do with George Zimmerman or the murder of Trayvon, have been receiving death threats because their address was made public on Twitter thanks to people like Spike Lee.

Spike Lee, the acclaimed director of “Do The Right Thing,” retweeted an address to his 250,000 followers that he believed to be George Zimmerman’s. He was wrong. The address belonged to David McClain, 72, and his wife, Elaine, 70.

According to the Daily Caller, the McClain’s have received death threats and are now “fearing for their lives.” Police have been notified and have been watching the house, but the McCalin’s decided to take precautions and have temporarily moved into a hotel.

The erroneous address was originally tweeted by Marcus Davonnne Higgins who wrote: “RT @MACCAPONE @SpikeLee EVERYBODY REPOST THIS George W. Zimmerman 159 Edgewater Circle Sanford, Florida 32773.”

Higgins apparently believed that the address belonged to George Zimmerman because Elaine has a son, William George Zimmerman. Elaine’s son is not the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin.

But the erroneous address really isn’t the point here. What if George Zimmerman’s real address had been made public? What if Spike Lee sent thousands of angry people to Zimmerman’s address? Would there be justice? No. Would someone else be dead? Possibly.

Trayvon Martin’s death was a tragedy and I hope that Zimmerman is forced to explain his actions. I hope that there’s enough evidence to put him away for life. I hope Trayvon Martin’s death will make people think about race relations in this country. But most of all, I hope people put down the pitchforks.

Do you think Spike Lee was inciting violence by retweeting Zimmerman’s address?
