‘Magic Mike XXL’ Star Joe Manganiello Says He Does Not Mind Being A Sex Symbol In New Interview

Joe Manganiello is ready to show you all that he’s got when Magic Mike XXL hits theaters in a few weeks. After the surprise success of the original, Joe and the boys — including star, producer and writer Channing Tatum, White Collar star Matt Bomer and newcomer Jada Pinkett Smith — are back bumping and grinding for the Magic Mike sequel.

In a new interview with Details magazine, Joe recently opened up about the danger of shooting his latest movie, and what it is like to be considered a sex symbol.

Playing a male stripper does not seem like a dangerous job. That is until you injure yourself while shooting a scene that involves a sex swing.

“I had to power through four and a half weeks of shooting, just dealing with the pain and praying that the biceps didn’t detach completely,” he says. “I had surgery the second I got back [to Los Angeles].”

It is no secret that women will flock to see Magic Mike XXL and witness the stars take it off. Does Joe ever get bothered by the fact that he is a sex symbol?

“Why would I?” he says. “I don’t think men care why women like them, as long as they do. That’s the point of the nerd in high school who makes it big. You work that hard for a reason. You want to have access to the dating pool.”

But his looks are not all there is to Joe Manganiello; just ask his Mike producer and co-star Channing Tatum. “Everybody sees Joe as the physical specimen he is — you can’t miss that,” Tatum says. “Unfortunately, that means people assume that he has no other attributes or skills until he proves it to them. But one of my favorite things about Joe is that he doesn’t feel the need to prove himself to anyone.”

Joe’s personal life has also been making headlines as of late. His Modern Family star fiancé, Sofia Vergara, is being sued over embryos she created with a former boyfriend; all while the gorgeous couple is trying to plan their wedding. But overall, Joe says he really has nothing to complain about.

“My life’s pretty damn good,” he says, “and if working out had anything to do with affording me the type of life I have, then bring on more.”

Joe is currently filming Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, a Judd Apatow production, for Netflix. You can catch Joe, Channing and the rest of the crew when Magic Mike XXL hit theaters on July 1, 2015.
