After a back-and-forth series, the teams will meet on Friday at 8 p.m. in the decisive match of the Eastern Conference Finals.

They have reached the win-or-go-home game thanks to a blowout in Game 6. With their season on the line, the New York Rangers dismantled the Lightning thanks to a hat trick from Derick Brassard, taking the contest 7-3.

For the Rangers, winning Game 7 would continue what once seemed an unlikely run. The team seemed all but done after the Washington Capitals grabbed a 3-1 series lead in the second round, but the Rangers tightened down behind the stellar play of Henrik Lundqvist, who is now 4-0 in elimination games this year and 9-1 stretching back to last year’s playoffs.

The Rangers blew the Game 6 contest open in the third period, scoring five goals.

“We capitalized early on our chances, and after that our goaltender was asked to make some big saves, which he did,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. “But in the third period, with our season on the line, we probably played our best period of this series so far. We wanted a chance and we got a chance.”

“The third period we weren’t ourselves,” forward Steve Stamkos said. “No excuses…. We’re not going to sit here and sulk and feel sorry for ourselves. We have to win a game on the road to get to the Cup finals. We’re confident with our ability to win on the road.”

To this point, the series has been about as even as possible. The Rangers have 21 goals to the Lightning’s 19, and Tampa has 190 shots to 179 for the Rangers.

While he has been nearly unstoppable in elimination games — the only loss over the last two years being the deciding game in the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals — he has struggled in losses. In Games 2 and 3, he gave up six goals each time, which wasted the Rangers’ five-goal performance in the third game of the series.
