The PacSun upside down flag T-shirt backlash prompted the retailer to pull the controversial item from its stores. Pacific Sunwear felt the wrath of thousands of irate customers after the American flag was shown in black and white and not red, white, and blue, and was hanging upside down in a sign of distress.

The PacSun flag T-shirt controversy garnered nationwide attention after a photo of the upside down flag shirt went viral during Memorial Day weekend. The photo was taken of a display window display at a Pacific Sunwear store location at the Tanger Outlets in Foley, Alabama.

PacSun made an announcement after pulling the upside down flag shirt from stores.

“As a retailer grounded in youth culture, PacSun values artistic and creative expression through the brands that we sell in our stores. Out of respect for those who have put their lives on the line for our country, we have decided to stop selling the licensed flag t-shirt and are removing it from our stores and website immediately. We thank the men and women in uniform for their extraordinary service. “
