January Jones Eats Her Son’s Placenta, But it’s Not as Gross as it Sounds

More strange celebrity mother/baby news! What is with today?! January Jones, the actress who plays Don Draper’s ice-queen ex on AMC’s Mad Men, told People that she has been eating her newborn baby boy’s placenta.

“I suggest it to all moms”, says 34-year-old Jones who gave birth to son, Xander Dane last September.

She says that the placenta “”gets dehydrated and made into vitamins, […] It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.” So we’re guessing she’s been keeping it in the fridge? Or something? Not so. And it’s actually not as disgusting as it sounds. The placenta has been made into capsules which Jones takes every day, or if she feels “tired or down.” She explains, oddly, “It’s not witch-crafty or anything.”

Set on spending quality time with her newborn after giving birth last September, Jones would bring baby Xander Dane to the set of Mad Men so that she could nurse him in between filming, saying “I had the baby and the baby nurse in their own room so I could go back and feed him every two hours.” She also kept Xander on standby in case she needed some quality time. “If I felt like he needed me, or if he needed to eat, or even if I just needed a squeeze because I was having separation issues, I would go back and see him. It was such a blessing that I wasn’t separated from him.”

She says that the hardest part of being an actress and a mom is exhaustion. “It was hard to work long days and then go home and not sleep,” says the actress. “It’s getting harder, not easier, so I’m a little concerned!” It also sounds like January Jones (who hasn’t yet revealed who the father is) is less like her fictional alter-ego, chilly and cold-hearted Betty Draper, and more like a real, loving mom. “I think my fans make cracks about it, but they don’t actually think I’d bring any of Betty’s parenting into my own life,” she explained. “What’s nice is that the expectations for my parenting is very low, so I can really only exceed the expectations.”

I’m not sure how to feel about Jones choosing to eat her son’s placenta, but hey. Whatever works for the lady! What do you think?
