Mom Regularly Breastfeeding 6-Year-Old Daughter Plans To Continue For Years, Sparks Controversy

Maha Al Musa is still breastfeeding her 6-year-old daughter, Aminah, on a regular basis. In fact, the Australian mom still breastfeeds so much that her daughter insists it’s her favorite thing to do outside of attending school, reports Daily Mail.

Of course, the 52-year-old mom sees no problem with her daughter’s age. She also stated that she would publicly breastfeed her daughter on a playground in front of her young friends if asked to. But, why? She believes there’s power in breast milk. During a recent interview with Woman’s Day, she explained why she’s chosen to breastfeed for so long.

“She says to me, ‘Mummy milkie.’ I could be in the middle of doing something or talking and it’s so natural to us, we don’t make a big deal of it,” Maha said.

Her daughter also chimed in in support of breastfeeding, explaining why she likes it so much. “Sometimes it tastes like candy canes,” she said. “It tastes like lots of different things,” Aminah said. “It’s my favorite thing to do when I’m not at school. More kids should because it’s good for you.” She added, “I might stop when I’m eight.”

According to Mirror Online, Musa has garnered lots of attention online due to her social media presence. She regularly shares Facebook posts of inspirational pictures in support of breastfeeding, along with personalized memes that read, “Breastfeed without fear.” She argues moms should not conform to cultural norms in order to do what’s deemed acceptable by society. Although many have argued breast milk lacks the same nutrients for children after they’ve reached a certain age, Musa strongly disagrees. She also cites the benefits of breastfeeding for emotional purposes.

“Let child and mother choose what’s best for them, their circumstance and family,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

“If we are all choosing then we are all equal. 4-8 (years) is NORMAL age for self weaning. There is no one forcing anyone to do natural term breastfeeding. If one woman feels comfortable and another uncomfortable then so be it.”

However, the emotional benefits she cites have been questioned also. Many theories have argued breastfeeding beyond infancy can potentially lead to social problems and lack of independence. Doctors have also raised concerns regarding dietary deficiency due to breast milk being included in the child’s diet. Although Musa’s claims are quite controversial, she’s not the first mom to face criticism for breastfeeding a school-aged child.

Back in December, another mom named Denise Sumpter also revealed she has a similar opinion of breastfeeding. As previously reported on Inquisitr, Sumpter was questioned about her daughter’s development due to her dependency on breast milk.
