France: Man Called In A Bomb Scare So Girlfriend Could Make Her Plane

A man in Bordeaux, France could face up to two years in prison along with a hefty fine after he called in a bomb scare to a local airport to delay his girlfriend’s flight.

It seems she was late getting to the Bordeaux-Merignac regional airport in southwestern France on Thursday and was in danger of missing her flight. She was apparently stuck in heavy traffic on the Bordeaux ring road.

According to the French language media website, Sud Ouest, her 33-year-old boyfriend decided to help her out and then allegedly called in a bomb scare to the airport at 7:30 a.m. local time, telling authorities, “There is a bomb, there is a bomb.”

Bomb scares these days are naturally not something to be taken lightly. After the man called in a bomb scare, police officers had to immediately seal off part of the airport in order to conduct a detailed search. When nothing suspicious was found, the police themselves became suspicious.

According to the Daily Mail, police then managed to track down the location of the call and then tracked down the boyfriend, who was arrested approximately 20 kms (12 miles) away from the city of Bordeaux. He was then taken into police custody.

Once police questioned the man, he confessed to having called in a bomb scare under false pretenses, saying he wanted to delay his girlfriend’s flight as she was stuck in traffic and was going to miss the plane.

His gallant and extremely foolish act could cost him, however, as prosecutors told AFP that he now risks facing up to two years in jail as well as a hefty 30,000 Euro ($33,000) fine.

It seems some passengers at the airport didn’t take the bomb scare seriously and, in fact, found the situation quite funny, immediately heading to Twitter and Instagram.

The unnamed man will be appearing in court in Bordeaux soon.
