Thomas Sancomb: Man Pronounced Dead Starts Moving, Breathing

Milwaukee resident Thomas Sancomb was pronounced dead on Tuesday, but reportedly started breathing and moving shortly before being taken to the morgue.

Daily Mail reports that the 46-year-old man had collapsed in his apartment. After two days of not being able to reach him, Sancomb’s girlfriend asked the police to check on him at his home.

The man’s body was later found by the building manager and a fire department officer. Paramedics from the Milwaukee Fire Department were dispatched to the scene and found that Sancomb’s body was “cold to the touch and in rigor.” According to the report, no attempt was made to resuscitate Thomas at the apartment and he was officially pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m.

Genevieve Penn, a forensic investigator, reported the death to Sancomb’s brother John.

Less than an hour later, when his body was set to be taken to the morgue, the transport team noticed that Sancomb was experiencing “spontaneous respirations.” Sancomb reportedly started moving his right leg and left arm as well.

Paramedics were sent back to the apartment, the family was notified and Sancomb’s pulse returned before he was transported to the Intensive Care Unit of Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital.

Gerard Washington, the assistant chief of the Milwaukee Fire Department, gave a statement about the incident to WISN.

“We’re doing an internal investigation to make sure that everything we did followed protocol. It’s an active investigation, so I can’t comment in detail.”

In an interview with the Associated Press, John Sancomb stated that he first became concerned about his brother a couple of weeks ago when he noticed that Thomas was not walking very well. However, he also claimed that his brother’s condition was improving daily.

“Thomas’ health is the most important thing we’re focusing on right now.”

John apparently opened up more to WISN about his brother’s condition, explaining exactly happened to him.

“The brother said his brother has a thyroid problem, which put him in a rare coma and dropped his body temperature to 84 degrees. the man’s neck and jaw were stiff, and first responders thought rigor was setting in.”

A hospital spokesman stated that no information about Thomas Sancomb could be disclosed due to federal privacy laws. However, WISN reports that the Milwaukee Fire Department is investigating the incident further.
