CBS reports that the most popular Memorial Day weekend activity for people across the nation is getting together with friends and relatives, followed by dining out and shopping. Fortunately, most stores will be open for both bargain hunters who are looking for a good deal and anyone who needs to pick up a few last-minute items for their holiday get together.

According to Saving Advice, Memorial Day is a big day for sales, so big box stores like Walmart, Target, Sears, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and Kohl’s will be open regular business hours. Most Walmart Supercenters are open 24 hours a day, so you can shop day or night for burgers, hot dogs, party supplies, and even a new gas grill for your cookout. According to CNBC, there are a total of 3,275 Supercenters in the U.S., so it’s likely there’s one located close by.

Consumers who want to stock up on food for their holiday barbecue at Costco should do their shopping on Saturday or Sunday — the warehouse-style retailer is one of the few stores that will be closed on May 25.

In most states, major supermarkets, including Stop and Shop, Food Lion, Publix, and Kroeger, will be open all day on Monday. However, many non-chain grocery stores and local liquor stores will only be open limited hours so their employees can enjoy part of the holiday with their families.

If your idea of entertaining is letting someone else cook for you, expect to find most chain restaurants, including Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Cracker Barrel, and Olive Garden, open on Monday. Call ahead as holiday hours often vary by location.

Because Memorial Day is a federal holiday, most non-essential government employees will have Monday off. Federal and state offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security, the IRS, and the U.S. Postal Service will all be closed on May 25. According to the Holiday Schedule, banks and credit unions will also be closed on Memorial Day.
