Robert Bales’ Wife: I Don’t Think He Killed Those People [Video]

Staff Sgt. Robert Bales has been charged with the shooting death of 17 Afghan civilians, charges that could bring with them a sentence of death. Now the 38-year-old staff sergeants wife is speaking out on his behalf.

Karilyn Bales sat down with Today host Matt Lauer and her responses were less than convincing.

According to Mrs. Bales when she was told her husband had killed 17 Afghan civilians she said, “I don’t think there are very many of those.”

Karilyn says she then “prayed and prayed” that her husband wasn’t the real suspect and when told by military officials that Robert Bales was responsible she said she stuck to her guns because “I just don’t think he was involved.”

Robert’s wife does admit that she doesn’t “know enough information” to create further theories about what happened but she says in her own belief “this is not what it appears to be. … This is not him. It’s not him.”

Karilyn further calls the accusations that Robert killed nine children “unbelievable” while adding:

“He loves children, he’s like a big kid himself … I have no idea what happened, but he would not … he loves children, and he would not do that. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine losing my children, so my heart definitely goes out to them for losing all of their children.”

In the meantime Mrs. Bales has talked to her husband on two separate occasions and she says he “seemed a bit confused” during both of their phone calls together.
