Australian Supermodel Breastfeeds: Nicole Trunfio ‘Elle’ Cover Has Led To ?#?NormalizeBreastfeeding? Being Used Over 100,000 Times On Instagram

Australian supermodel Nicole Trunfio‘s breast feeding Elle cover has led to the hashtag #normalizebreastfeeding to be used on social media more than 100,000 times, specifically on Instagram, with many people re-posting Trunfio’s cover photo, according to the New York Daily News.

“There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood. The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is, let us ?#?normalizebreastfeeding? there is nothing worse than a mother that is judged for feeding her hungry child in public. ?#?weareonlyhuman? I’m so proud of this cover and what it’s stands for,” she captioned her photo.”

“I obviously don’t look like this or wear while I am breastfeeding but this stands for all women out there, whether you breastfeed or not, we gave birth, we are women, we are mothers,” she continued. “Thank you to ELLE for being so bold and making such an encouraging, positive and healthy statement. ?#?womenunite?.”

The Australian model’s intimate photos appear in the subscriber only cover of Elle Australia’s June issue, according to Fox News. She said the breast feeding photos were unplanned and were very natural.

“When I saw the cover of me breastfeeding, which was unplanned and just natural, I teared up and thought, ‘Wow this is such a special moment where my worlds have collided’,” Trunfio said. “There’s the maternal side of me, who so loves being a mum, and the professional side, who’s so passionate about her career.”

“This is sexual-ising it. This photo is totally unrepresentative of breast feeding mums,” one Facebook user wrote. “Everything about it is wrong. Women should not have to make it ‘sexy’ in order for it to be acceptable.”

Many people thought the photographs were staged, and were trying to make breast feeding look sexy, rather than what it is. However, Elle editor Justine Cullen said that was definitely not the case.

“This wasn’t a contrived situation: Zion needed a feed, Nicole gave it to him, and when we saw how beautiful they looked we simply moved her onto the set,” she explained. “It was completely natural moment that resulted in a powerful picture.”

“It’s a pitiful truth that women are still regularly shamed or made to feel awkward for performing the fundamental act of feeding their babies wherever and whenever they need to (of course, they’re also still shamed for not being able or choosing not to breastfeed, which I equally maddening,” Cullen added. “Exposure to breastfeeding in the media is one of the things we can do to counter this, so I love this cover on many levels.”
