Seventh ‘Neverwinter’ Expansion Announced, ‘Strongholds’ Adds Guild-Controlled Keeps To Conquer

Neverwinter, the Dungeons and Dragons MMO from Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment, is expanding soon with the game’s seventh module. “Strongholds” will let guilds take control of contested keeps when it launches. The expansion was officially announced today on the Neverwinter website but it has no release window confirmed at this time.

The theme of “Strongholds” is that player-ran guilds will be able to enter the largest zone in Neverwinter, fight the aggressive foes claiming the abandoned keep, and take the land and structure for their guild. Clearing out the wildlife and squatters in the area will let the guild build defenses surrounding the keep.

After a keep is taken by a guild in Neverwinter, the guild will be able to bolster the surrounding area with guards, new buildings, and other lines of defense. The keep may be taken for the moment, but a guild will have to defend it against invading NPCs and players if they wish to retain possession of the keep.

“Reminiscent of early Dungeons & Dragons lore, Neverwinter: Strongholds empowers guilds to reclaim a keep and its surrounding areas that have been overrun by the wild. As the lands are cleared, guilds will build defenses both in and around their strongholds using structures like barracks and additional troops armed to protect the keep. Once the keep has been secured, guilds will have to battle against the environment as well as other players to ensure they maintain control of their lands.”

There will be more to “Strongholds” beyond guild-controlled keeps. Neverwinter developers promise to show more on the module in the coming weeks. More details on strongholds will be divulged in addition to “non-stronghold related content.”

Although “Strongholds” is officially announced for Neverwinter on the PC, many Xbox One players are curious if the expansion will come to console as well. No formal announcement on its release on Xbox One has been made other than additional “expansions coming to Xbox soon,” however, “Strongholds” and the other missing modules from the Xbox One version of the game are likely on the way. Five expansions are reportedly on the way in 2015 for the console version of the game as evidenced by the Inquisitr.

Neverwinter developers are busier still with the module after “Strongholds” already announced. The eighth module, tentatively called “Underdark,” takes players to Menzoberranzan where players will get to battle together with Drizzt Do’Urden when that expansion launches. A quest line written by R.A. Salvatore will also be a big part of that expansion.
