Soap Opera Guiding Light canceled by CBS

Soap opera Guiding Light has been canceled by CBS after a staggering 72 year run.
Guiding Light started as a radio serial on NBC in 1937, and switched to television on CBS in 1952. Guinness Book of World Records credits the series as being the longest-running soap opera in production and the longest running drama in television and radio history.
15,700 episodes later, the show has faced declining ratings in recent years, despite adopting story lines to the social issues of the time. Producers though haven’t given up hope, and are shopping the show to other networks in an attempt to keep it on air. The last scheduled show will air September 18 on CBS.

I have watched Guiding Light for as long as I can remember and I'm 51. I love this soap and it is the only one I watch. It seems like CBS takes every show off I like and I'm sick of it. The other soaps aren't as good as GL and I guess the other few shows I watch will be taken off now. If it isn't a stupid reality show or full of sex they don't want it. I've tried watching the other shows and they are just too boring. I love GL and hope they change their minds about taking if off but I know they won't . I say boycott CBS!!!! Let them know they are wrong………….

Guiding Light has been going down for some time.Bring back the closed sets it has started looking like a B movie more than a soap opera.I still love the show but truth is the truth. Needs more spice.

Moving it to 10AM killed a great soap opera. Goodbye!!

In many ways i'll be sorry to see G.L. end but in the past 5-10 years it has been getting worse and worse. Imagine Reva at least 60 is pregnant. Reva gets cancer and does not tell the love of her life Josh. It was all to bad to watch.

You are right. The set thing was horrible. Everyone in town lives in the Beacon or at Company and you had the actors out in the scorching sun, pouring rain and my God the most awful snow storms and cold weather. It is no wonder they were not all sick all the time. I am sorry to see a show end that I watched since 8th grade and I am 67 but it needs to end if you cannot afford to do better. The actors deserve better as they are all wonderful.

I don't like CBS CANCELING MY FAVORITE SHOW! I watch As The World Turns and The Guiding light. If they put GL, on another channel, I will turn there to watch it. I only hope that it doesn't come on ,at the same time, as my other favorite show,ATWT. Or put it on a channel that i can't pick up. I can only get 4 channels, with my T.V. It's not going to be the same, if they take it off the air completely. I may have to get used to watching ATWT, on channel 5,then watching everthing else, on 4,2,and8. I like channel 8. I guess I can learn to watch other channels. Channel 5 was my favorite channel, but they're changing too many shows that I enjoyed watching. I guess , we as viewers, have the right ,to watch other networks. I'm sorry to say though, if too many of us do this, your ratings will go down, on alot more shows than just The Guiding Light!

I have been watching Guiding Light my entire life. I am 49 and watched with my Mom. What a great cast of talented actors. My fav has always been Reva Shayne…gutsy, bold, …she has always been my idol. Its a shame that CBS should look at cancelling Guiding Light and not look at other soaps who don't have the talent that this show pulls. I am a disc jockey and very familiar with talent…so I wish that Guiding Light would reconsider their decision …or as noted move it to another channel..If that does happen…Please let us “devoted” Guiding Light watchers know where its heading too! Thanks for 72 years of a great soap! Karla Franson, Peoria, Il. n

I can not belive they are canceling Guiding Light. I have watched since I was a little girl with my mom, And my grandma. I am 38. My grandma died a few years back at the age of 93. The people in Guding Light were like real people to her. Whenver we would talk on the phone she refered to Reva, Josh etc as if she knew them. taking this off the air is killing the best memory I have of my grandma!!! This just stinks!

I watched guiding light for years, they had a good story line.their story changed. i watched to forget about my problems,if i want to see all the poltics ,i will watch the news. this is for entertainment, not for writers expressing how they feel about every social issue.also ,i dont care to see teens on their.was a show for adults. i think they should fire all the writers and get new ones that will bring back the story line for adults. you also had to screw with josh and reva. you will find the soaps that last dont concentrate
on teenagers. teens dont watch guiding light.i say FIRE the writers and get new ones. until then i wll stay with the young and restless.

It will be a very very sad day when the Guiding Light is turned off of CBS. I've been watching from 1962. Please try to go to another station. These people like family to me and others.

How to save Guiding Light.
1st. Get rid of the way the opening introduction is displayed. Go back to the old Guilding Light openers. This new way stinks.
2nd. Stop hiring young actors. Although, talented. Many young people are into the internet, games, videos. They only get introducted to soap operas by their parents, aunts, or grandparents.
3rd. Bring back some of the good guys. Kim Zimmer has been on the show for a long time. It is lost without her. But because of all the changes, Guiding Light isn't at all like the soap opera that I've grown up to watch.
4th. Stop filming it the way it's being done now. It's really not any good.
5th. Get some better writers. Sorry. But what's written now just isn't all the best the show has to offer.

i find it hard to believe that they would take this soap off the air, after all it is the longest soap running, you would think there would be loyalty to the past and find a way to keep it on. i am appauld and will not watch other cbs shows anymore

i would think that cbs would go out of there way for the longest running soap opera, where is the loaylty to the past. I am very disapointed in cbs and will not watch this station as soon as GL is off the air.

Hello. I watch all my sopas on CBS and I am sorry to hear that Guiding Light is leaving the air. So people say sometimes “Good things do not last forever” This is one of those times to say this phrase. Was curious why the show as filmed outside alot in the past few weeks. Did the studio burn down? I understand that several fires have burnt homes and businesses in LA CA. Is Guiding Light filmed in LA or NY? Good luck to all cast & crew on GL.

I think is a shame that after so many years that the show is canceled I have watched this soap all my life and remember my Mother and Grandmother watching the show so I have watched and felt like a part of the Reva and Josh along with different ones lifes on the show and feel like a part of me will be missing.

I am totally discussed since I heard you are cancelling Guidlight. I have watch this program for over forty years.
I will no longer watch Chanel 2 I stated my day with Chanel 2. That will no longer be. I will go to Chanel 7 news and then watch Opera. I hope your ratings drop. I hate game shows.
DISILLUSIONED, DIS APPOINTED AND DISCUSSED.

My family has tuned into Guiding Light since it was a radio show. My dad remembers my grandmother listing to it. It has been a part of my entire life. I wasn't able to watch it when I worked full time, but was always excited to see it on my vacations and holidays at that time. I'm very sad to see it end, I hope they find another network to pick it up. If not I hope they do a lot of memory shows, especially from the 80's as I watched it right after school when Phillip, Rick, Beth and Mindy were on it. I was a bit dissappointed with their 25 year High School reunion, I know it's not the same Beth, but they could have made it much better with old footage. I even made my best friend a velvet cape for her wedding shower gift because of one of Josh and Reva's weddings, she wore a beautiful velvet cape. So sorry to see it end!!!!!!!!!

It is truly sad that an icon like Guiding Light is cancelled, which has a following that spans generations and reality shows and court shows dominate the networks. I myself have watched this how for 50 years since I was a child. I am a professional working woman and have found the storylines always timely and interesting. I hope another station has the good sense to pick up the option of Guiding Light.

I cannot believe that Guiding Light is going off the air. I am for keeping the show. Love the actors, actresses
and the show. I think CBS should reconsider and take some other show off. I am not interested in another talk show.
