Alma Del Real’s Body Found, Man Who Helped Search For Her Is Charged With Her Murder

South Bend Police held a press conference on Wednesday evening, reporting that the body of 22-year-old Alma Del Real has been found. The South Bend, Indiana, woman was last seen leaving a local club on April 12 with Alberto Cruz, a 24-year-old friend. Cruz was concerned that Del Real had too much to drink and wanted to ensure she arrived home safely. After her disappearance, Cruz tried to stay out of the public eye, since he was the last one to be seen with Del Real. However, he did join in on some search parties. On May 20, Cruz was arrested for the murder of Del Real after showing police where her body was hidden.

NBC News reported that Cruz was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail after he was arrested. Police officials stated that during a round of questioning, Cruz led the to a location in Marshall County where Del Real’s body was located and preliminarily identified. Cruz was accused by many of Del Real’s peers prior to his arrest, many stating that the circumstances of her disappearance and his inconsistent stories did not add up.

It is thought that there may be more information regarding Del Real’s death, and police are urging anyone with any further details to reach out to them.

WNDU TV reported that the preliminary identification is not official, and that an autopsy is being performed to provide a positive identification on the body. Investigators in the case have stated that although Cruz is behind bars, the investigation is still ongoing until all of the details have been obtained.

The lead investigator on the case, Jennifer Gobel, shared in the press conference that the case has been an emotional one. Everyone involved hoped to find Del Real alive and well, and were upset that the end was not a happy one. She also shared her condolences with Del Real’s family.

“I want to send out my heartfelt condolences to the family. I know as much of the toll it took on me and my personal family regarding this case, I can’t imagine what it’s done for them. My little girl asks me every day if I found Alma yet and I get to go home and say ‘we have.’ “
