Child’s Play Shuts Down ‘Retake Mass Effect 3’ Fundraiser

If you frequent any gaming-related message boards or websites, you’re probably already aware that a pretty large amount of gamers are extremely disappointed by Mass Effect 3‘s ending.

A couple of campaigns to get BioWare to either change the ending or offer clarification popped up, but ‘Retake Mass Effect 3’ stood out from the rest by attempting to add a little positivity to all of the controversy.

On the surface, it sounded innocent enough; rather than having gamers sign a petition, Retake Mass Effect 3 urged disappointed fans to donate to Child’s Play charity to help spread the word and give to a good cause at the same time.

Unfortunately, the ‘Retake Mass Effect 3’ campaign, while fairly successful, caused a few headaches with the charity and a whole lot of confusion for the donors. As a result, the campaign’s organizer said in a recent post that the fundraiser would be capped at 80,000.

“[Child’s Play] pointed out that several sources are incorrectly assuming a link between the charity and the petition, or outright support of the petition by the charity. This has been the source of some difficulty for them, and it has been requested that we wind this effort down,” the Retake Mass Effect 3 founder wrote. “Again, I want to stress that the charity is not unhappy with our work, they are exceptionally pleased with what we have accomplished.”

Penny Arcade’s Jerry “Tycho” Holkins, one of the founders of the Child’s Play charity, went into more detail on why the fundraiser had to be shut down.

“Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect,” he wrote. “[Child’s Play] has been asked what the goal is, and how much they need to raise in order to get the ending produced. We’ve also been contacted by PayPal due to a high number of people asking for their donations back. This is in addition to readers who simply couldn’t understand how this was connected to Child’s Play’s mission. We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem.”

Holkins concluded: “Child’s Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause. Child’s Play must be the Cause”.
