Rick Santorum Claims Victory In Louisiana Primary

Rick Santorum claimed victory over Mitt Romney last night in Louisiana’s Republican primary, further reiterating the point that Santorum’s conservative southern base is solid.

Louisiana has a total of 46 delegates at stake, of which, only 20 were in play at last night as the rest will be determined in June at the state convention. Santorum was able to grasp 8 of the 20 delegates, while Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich were unsuccessful in their attempts to win any delegates.

Early Saturday, Romney had 563 delegates to Santorum’s 263. With twice as many delegates as Santorum to win the Republican nomination, Newt Gingrich at 135 and Ron Paul with a mere 53, it appears as if Romney still commands the lead.

Louisiana candidates must achieve 25% threshold in the statewide popular vote in order to receive delegates.

Santorum’s campaign is disputing the numbers and insisting that they’re actually closer than previously reported. The error they claim is attributed to potential delegate shifts at both country as well as state conventions.

While Louisiana is not a “winner take all” state, Maryland, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia all are and Mitt Romney is favored to win all three. This leaves an increasingly small window of opportunity for Romney’s rivals to make up lost ground.

The likelihood of someone other than Mitt Romney winning the nomination is deteriorating rapidly, however, it has yet to become mathematically impossible.

Mitt Romney requires a total of 1,144 delegates in order to ensure that he receives the nomination.
