NBA Trade Rumors: San Antonio Spurs Want LaMarcus Aldridge

NBA trade rumors indicate the San Antonio Spurs want LaMarcus Aldridge, either through a trade or simply signing Aldridge as a free agent. The Spurs have set their sights on acquiring the All-Star power forward during the NBA offseason. This is not good news for Portland Trail Blazers fans, especially if Aldridge decides that he wants to move on to a new city. A report from CBS Sports indicates that the Spurs hope Aldridge will want to return to Texas and leave his former team behind.

The reason this pops up in the NBA trade rumors is because the Spurs might have a hard time signing Aldridge outright. That is where a sign-and-trade deal with the Blazers might come about, even if the team is reluctant to part with its big man. If they are forced to do so, though, getting assets in return for losing Aldridge might soften the blow a bit. CBS Sports went into what the “dream scenario” would be for the Spurs in the NBA offseason.

“The free-agent plan for the Spurs is to quickly agree on a five-year max deal with [Kawhi] Leonard – ‘It will be a short conversation,’ one person with knowledge of the dynamics said – and empower Leonard to join [Tim] Duncan in an all-out recruitment of All-Star free agent LaMarcus Aldridge.”

It’s important to also point out that the San Antonio Spurs have several players heading into free agency. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Danny Green are all unrestricted free agents, while Kawhi Leonard is a restricted free agent. Being restricted means that the team can match any contract offer another franchise offers him. Regarding Duncan and Ginobili, the team doesn’t even know for sure whether they will decide to retire or return for another season.

The Spurs are certainly going to pop up in many NBA trade rumors if the core of the team decides that it is time to hang up their jerseys. The Spurs were eliminated by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first-round of the 2015 NBA Playoffs. That might work against the front office being able to convince everyone to come back, but as reported by Inquisitr, at least the Spurs took the series to seven games.

The Portland Trail Blazers are going to be mentioned in quite a few NBA trade rumors, as the team tries to figure out its next move. Key free agents include Wesley Matthews and Robin Lopez, in addition to LaMarcus Aldridge, so big changes could soon be coming to Moda Center.
