Seattle Seahawks Rumors: Russell Wilson Wants Contract From Seahawks That Is Richest In NFL History?

Seattle Seahawks rumors about the Russell Wilson contract may startle some fans. Wilson reportedly wants the Seahawks to give him a contract that would be the richest in NFL history. It appears that could be the reason why it was suggested that the Seahawks and Wilson are so far apart in the negotiating phase of this deal. A video from Bleacher Report states that Wilson would want a contract that is at or above what Jay Culter made in his new deal with the Chicago Bears.

The Bears gave Cutler a seven-year, $126.7 million deal, with $54 million in guaranteed money. Colin Kaepernick received a similar amount of total money in his deal, but only $17 million of it was guaranteed by the San Francisco 49ers. It is that “guaranteed” portion of the contract which becomes very important, as NFL deals are non-guaranteed in principal. It has become very apparent that Wilson wants the Seahawks to guarantee a lot of money in his new deal.

The Seattle Times recently reported on a contract offer that the Seattle Seahawks had “believed” to have made to Wilson. That deal was $80 million for four years and would have begun with the 2015 NFL season. It also meant that the team only wanted to pay him $1.5 million for the 2015 NFL season (the value of his current contract). Those numbers haven’t been confirmed by the team, but it would indicate that the Seahawks weren’t ready to make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. That honor belongs to Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers at $22 million per season.

As previously reported on the Inquisitr, it appeared that the Seattle Seahawks were making Russell Wilson wait for his big payday. Heading into the NFL offseason, it seemed like, in addition to re-signing Marshawn Lynch to a contract extension, that the biggest thing the Seahawks needed to do was give Wilson a contract extension as well. Instead, it seems as though the negotiations have been dragged out, something that does not often turn out well between a franchise and its star player.

Regarding the contract that the Green Bay Packers gave Aaron Rodgers, it was a five-year, $110 Million deal. $62.5 million of that deal was guaranteed, and it gave the former NFL MVP about $40 million for the 2013 NFL season. Part of that was a big bonus the team extended him as a sign of goodwill moving forward. That’s something the Seahawks may have to consider doing as the negotiations drag one.

Despite the rumors, most Seattle Seahawks fans are convinced that a deal is going to get done this offseason and that Russell Wilson would never leave the team. Now the team just needs to make sure the negotiations don’t become a huge distraction for the 2015 NFL season.
