Blizzard Already Working On Fifth World of Warcraft Expansion

Despite the fact that World of Warcraft‘s 4th expansion, Mists of Pandaria, is only now going into closed beta with no set release date, Blizzard is apparently already thinking about the popular MMO’s 5th and 6th expansions.

Speaking to CVG, Blizzard COO Paul Sams confirmed that the 5th expansion is already in development, and that the team already has a plan for several expansions beyond World of Warcraft expansion #5.

“I got the pitch from Chris Metzen of what they plan for 6.0 and I’m pretty geeked up about it,” Sams said. “They already know what they’re going to be doing for multiple expansions ahead.”

Development on the MMO’s 5th expansion is pretty early on in the production cycle, but Sams said that the developers have already laid out a “general framework” for expansion #5.

“They have an idea – a general framework. They’re these lore creators. They’re the ones who drive what the world looks like today and what it’ll be like tomorrow and beyond. I think the future of World Of Warcraft continues to be bright and I think Mists of Pandaria is going to breathe huge life into what I believe is the best MMO out there. I think the number of people we have playing and the level of enthusiasm they have for the game suggests that to be the case.”

Blizzard has yet to set a release date for Mists of Pandaria, but the developer recently confirmed that it’s still shooting for a 2012 release date.
