Going To Prom Fulfills Vow Between HS Quarterback And Girl With Down Syndrome Made Seven Years Ago [Video]

Going to prom is a ritual among high school students. But it took on special meaning for a high school quarterback when he fulfilled a promise made seven years ago to take a friend with Down syndrome to the event, reported E! News.

Meet high school student Ben Moser, a junior who is the quarterback on his school’s football team. The popular teen had plenty of choices when it came to prom invitations.

But seven years ago, Ben had promised his fourth-grade teacher, Tracey Spogli, to take his friend with Down syndrome to his very first prom. Remembering that vow about Mary Lapkowicz, Ben focused on her personality rather than her condition.

“I thought Mary was really cool,” he declared. “She was sweet and easy to get along with.”

Their elementary school teacher recalls Ben’s effort to make sure Mary was never excluded from activities or games because of Down syndrome, reported Penn Live.

“He watched over her constantly. If she was looking like she wasn’t having fun, he would go over and talk to her. He would pull her in to what ever activity they were doing. He just always watched out for her.”

Mary remembered Ben fondly.

“He was sweet and he was nice,” she praised.

Also aware of the special friendship were Ben’s mom, Lisa Moser, and Mary’s mother, Ann Marie.

“I didn’t know until fourth grade at the end of the school year party in [Spogli’s] classroom,” said Lisa.

Although the two elementary school pals parted ways when Mary moved to a different school district, Ben remembered when years later, his high school and the high school that Mary was attending competed on the football field.

Mary’s father, Tom Lapkowicz, recalls his daughter’s dreams about going to prom.

“She talked about going to prom. I’d taken her to homecoming and stuff, but she had prom on her mind all along.”

But no one involved dreamed that Ben would keep his promise — except for the high school quarterback himself.

“We got balloons and I wrote ‘prom’ on it,” revealed Ben of how he invited his long-time friend. “I presented her with the balloons and asked her to go to prom with me.”

“I was surprised,” grinned Mary. “I was going to go with some friends.”

Neither had any fears of being ridiculed or teased.

“I don’t think it should be too weird,” Ben stated firmly. “There [are] good kids there.”

When it comes to acts of kindnessTaylor Swift also showed her desire to pay it forward, as the Inquisitr reported.

When she learned that a 12-year-old fan was battling cancer, Taylor reached out to talk with the young girl. The 12-year-old’s mother revealed that nothing meant more than her conversation with Taylor.

“The smile on my daughter [is one] I have not seen in a very, very long time,” said Nadia Beazley emotionally. “I could cry.”
