Asa Butterfield Cast As ‘Spider-Man’: Actor In Talks With Marvel [Report]

Marvel is reportedly in talks with 18-year-old actor Asa Butterfield. Spider-Man was open, and his name was one of those rumored to be in the run to star as the superhero and now it appears that he has landed the part.

Umberto Gonzalez shared the news on Instagram Thursday afternoon, and it has spread like wildfire. He says that we should get confirmation sooner rather than later.

“THE NEWS YOU BEEN WAITING FOR! MARVEL HAS FOUND THEIR NEW SPIDER-MAN! IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING TO BE ASA BUTTERFIELD FOLKS AS MARVEL HAS OFFICIALLY ENTERED INTO NEGOTIATIONS WITH BUTTERFIELD’S REPS! PAPERWORK HAS NOT BEEN FINALIZED YET! ONCE DEAL CLOSES EXPECT AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! BOOM!”

The fact that Marvel is going with such a young actor means that the role will be around for a long time with Asa Butterfield. Spider-Man was left vacant when Andrew Garfield departed/was fired from the starring role. Tobey Maguire previously played the superhero.

However, that is in the past now, and Marvel is clearly focusing on injecting life into the troubled character with Butterfield (Ender’s Game) as the lead. Normally, in situations like these, fans tune out because of all the drama surrounding the departure of previous cast members, but the studio can’t afford that and is taking action immediately.

Spider-Man is taking center stage and will become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a planned appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which premieres next year. After a general outcry from fans, Sony Pictures and Marvel are letting everyone know that they were listening, and will see a Spider-Man live action movie become a part of their established universe, which will explain the decision to cast such a young actor, according to Screen Rant.

“This Spidey is going to be younger, potentially 15-16 years old on screen, and he’s going to be in high school for a while. He’s going to be a major player for a very long time so consider this the closest thing to Marvel’s Harry Potter. After the property rebooted (again) via a Marvel-backed introduction in 2016, the web-slinger gets his own solo movie (potentially featuring Iron Man) in summer 2017. It could be titled The Spectacular Spider-Man or according to new rumors, Spider-Man: The New Avenger, but what matters is who is going to play him.”

Aside from the almost-sure-thing, Asa Butterfield, Spider-Man contenders were Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Tom Holland (In The Heart of The Sea), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), and Liam James (The Killing) as possible contenders.

Butterfield — a proven British actor who recently turned 18 — was the reported front-runner for weeks, as Marvel — in conjunction with Sony — has already begun production for Captain America: Civil War.
