A woman and two children were found dead inside a car on Thursday in New Orleans. The discovery happened after police issued an alert that a suicidal woman had run off with her two children — ages and 5 and 3, the Advertiser reports.
At first authorities didn’t identify Michelle McCullum and her children, but one of the clues was the dark blue 2014 Nissan Murano that the suicidal woman was driving — it matched the description of her car and license plate, police spokesman Detective Juan Barnes, says.
McCullum was known to have experienced personal problems and told her mother Wednesday night she had a gun and was afraid she’d harm the children.
David DeGruy, a diesel mechanic at Richard’s Disposal Inc., told police that he checked on an SUV parked near the office in eastern New Orleans. He was informed by one of his drivers that someone was slumped behind the steering wheel. DeGruy said that the woman was slumped over and “leaning towards the passenger side.” She also had “blood all over her head and shoulder.”
DeGruy said he saw the woman, but not the two children until police broke a window and opened the car door. Both were in the back of the car laying on the floor.
The Times-Picayune reports on the identities of the two children found dead: 3-year-old Cylie Nicole McCullum and 5-year-old Caden Nicholas McCullum.
NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison confirms that all three were fatally shot with a.40-caliber handgun belonging to McCullum. WGNO News reports that the disturbed mother shot her two kids before turning the gun on herself in this murder-suicide case.
Prior to the mother and two children found dead inside the car, family members called 911 after midnight to tell them they feared for the safety of the children.
According to the report, McCullum had first enrolled at UNO in 2007 — and went back to school in 2012. The deceased mother was a part-time student this semester. She was a sophomore studying to be a dental hygienist.
As Inquisitr has reported, there have been too many times that parents kill their own children before taking their own lives. Typically it involves custody battles and ugly break-ups. A motive in this story of the mother and her 2 kids found dead in a car hasn’t been revealed. Her family is asking for privacy at this time and isn’t commenting more on the tragedy.
