Phantom Alert: Speed Trap Warning System For Your GPS

Posted: March 30, 2009

Phantom AlertA new piece of software called Phantom Alert claims to add warnings for hidden police cameras and DUI checkpoints right into your GPS system. Phantom Alert provides 100,000 “enforcement locations,” its maker says, then sends you a warning before you hit any of those areas.

Phantom Alert: How It Works

Phantom Alert works by using user-submitted notes of enforcement sites, then uploading them into your car’s system. “You will see them before they see you,” the company promises.

The software runs about $10 a month or is also available for a $40/year or $100/lifetime subscription.

Phantom Alert Videos

Not surprisingly, Phantom Alert is creating some controversy. The following two videos discuss the program, how it works, and what concerns are being expressed about its functionality.

  1. This piece of software is AWESOME!!!

  2. I've had a software like thjis on my Tom Tom for more than 2 years for less than 20 € (lifetime). on my new Navigon 2150max its preinstalled for free.
it's banned in some european countrys but nobody can control if you install it or not.
I don't know why its something new ynd expensive in the US but in europe its quite old and cheap. If you know how you can also find free offers which are not as complete as the professional software.

  3. PhantomAlert is another slimy product designed to help selfish drivers flaunt the law. And since red light cameras, radar traps, and photo radar vans are constantly changing locations, it's a scam. Why not do yourself a favour and simply obey the law. These laws are designed to protect all of us.

  4. In our region, it's the red light cameras that are the scam. They're used to nab people who don't wait more than 3 seconds before turning right on red, even after a full stop. This effectively renders the right-on-red rule useless since perfectly safe openings disappear in that interval. People end up waiting for 3 seconds, then barrelling out – cutting someone off – no ticket for that, though. These cameras are a very flawed (and dangerous) method for pocketing millions from unsuspecting motorists.
