Harriet Tubman Vs Raven Symone: ‘I Would Choose A Different Woman’

On the topic of Harriet Tubman and the $20 bill, Raven Symone sparks her seemingly-confusing views again. On The View, Raven states that she wants someone else.

Recently, there’s been discussion and petition to replace Andrew Jackson’s face on the $20 bill with another. The petition says that there needs to be a significant woman as replacement, specifically a black woman. Of several significant candidates, Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist, has been most-chosen.

Well, though Tubman was greatly instrumental in the abolition of slavery, The View‘s Raven Symone feels that she’s possibly irrelevant to current conditions and that someone else should be used.

As the show aired, the focus turned to Raven as she gave her opinion on the Harriet Tubman choice.

“No offense to everyone that’s going to be mad at me for saying this, I don’t like that idea. I think we need to move a little bit forward. Let me just preface that I understand the history, I get it. Trust me, I was taught, I was in that culture…

… I would’ve chosen Rosa Parks. I would have chosen someone that is closer to the progression that we’re doing now. I know you have to understand history so you don’t repeat it, but that doesn’t happen in our world, because we still repeat history of hating other cultures over and over again. I would choose a different woman, no offense.”

However, though the other talk show hostesses agreed with Raven’s view, Rosie Perez stood up for the Tubman choice.

“I like Harriet Tubman. You know, she set a precedent. She was very bold. She risked her life over and over and over again with the Underground Railroad. And it would be good if it were Harriet. It would be good if it were Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Wilma [Mankiller]…

…I don’t care. Just as long as it’s a woman.”

After stating about Harriet, the cast made a mock-up of Whoopi Goldberg on the bill. Though it was a clever illustration, Raven is said to be subbing for Goldberg while she is with her family. Unfortunately, her brother has died from a brain aneurysm.

Nevertheless, what do you think about Raven Symone‘s opinion about Tubman’s potential presence on the United States’ $20 bill. Do you agree with Symone, or do you feel like Perez?
