Emilia Clarke Talks Arnold, ‘Terminator Genisys’ Challenges, Threesomes, And More

Emilia Clarke and Arnold Schwarzenegger star together in one of this summer’s biggest movies. Terminator Genisys is still weeks away from release, but Clarke is already talking about her appearance as Sarah Connor and the film in interviews. That is in part to her other big role in HBO’s Game of Thrones. That series returned to the small screen last month.

Emilia Clarke is on the cover of the next issue of Harper’s Bazaar, and the actress spoke about all of the craziness in her life at the moment. The issue will not hit newsstands until May 26, but the magazine shared some of the highlights of her interview on their site this week. Clarke was quite candid about her life since Game of Thrones, fame, working on Terminator Genisys, and more.

Clarke admitted that landing her role on Game of Thrones changed her life. She was an unknown in Hollywood when she landed the audition for the series. She admitted that the role “opened a lot of doors” for her.

“I was literally so over the moon to have an audition, just an audition, let alone for HBO. I was doing a million jobs and thinking it would never happen. Not a chance. Not. A. Chance. [Now] that’s my face; it’s on that television. ‘It’s not TV, it’s HBO.’ But every time I see it and every time I hear it, I wait for [sings] the Sex and the City song … every time!”

Now, she is taking on one of the most iconic film females of all time. Linda Hamilton created the role of Sarah Connor in the first Terminator film released in 1984. Arnold appeared in that film with Hamilton as the machine sent from the future to kill her. Terminator Genisys is rebooting the film series and changing the history that fans have known since 1984. Clarke is the third incarnation of Sarah Connor. Lena Headey, her Game of Thrones co-star, took on the role for The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series. Clarke revealed that this time Connor “has a different backstory. She’s grown up knowing what she had to do.” Arnold Schwarzenegger is back for this film, and this time someone programmed his terminator to raise Sarah and prepare her for the war against the machines. Clarke spoke about what it was like to work with the movie icon for the film.

“It never gets old. He was so much fun. I expected this massive ego to turn up, but he is this charming, sweet, kind man. He got really excited to film the scenes.”

It was not all fun for Clarke though. The film was a physical challenge for her. Being the only female in the cast was not easy either.

“The hours were so long and the guns were so heavy, so I had to get myself into a place where I wouldn’t crap out at four o’clock. And also I am the only girl, so I wanted to be like, ‘Hey, boys, let me give you a run for your money.'”

Clarke and Schwarzenegger talked about their preparations for the film with People magazine. Weapons training was a big challenge for the actress, but she became “ballsy” once she learned what to do.

“[The grenade launcher] was, like, 70 lbs. It was so heavy, and they were like, ‘Here you go, Emilia. Now run up that slight hill firing it.’ It was really fun to do different kinds of training than what I would do myself and feel strong. [But when you finish], you’re like, ‘Please, can I have cake? Like, a chocolate cake, and a beer?'”

Arnold praised Clarke for her work on the film though. He had managed to keep in shape over the last 30 years, but Clarke was new to this type of action work.

“I always stay in pretty good shape, except with this one I stepped it up a notch… I did more cardiovascular training just to make sure I’m ready for the stunts. [Clarke] was so dedicated. It’s pretty tough to live up to this kind of part, but she did a fantastic job, especially with the handling of the weapons in the fight scenes.”

Clarke’s life has changed in the last four years, but she still manages to get star struck. She shared a funny story about an encounter with Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan with Harper’s Bazaar.

“I was at a Golden Globes after-party and Channing Fu**ing Tatum came up to me, and his stunning missus, Jenna. And they said, ‘We call each other “moon of my life” and “my sun and stars” and all that.’ And I was like, ‘I cannot contain this. Please, can we all have something sexual together? You’re both beautiful, even just a hug.'”

She also revealed in her interview that Jay-Z and Beyonce bought one of the dragon eggs from Game of Thrones as well.

What will Emilia Clarke do next? The actress is ready to take on a more dramatic role that will not involve her dealing with a green screen at all. She wants to do more character pieces. She revealed for her next role she does not even need a stunt double. According to a previous Inquistr report, the sequel to Terminator Genisys will go into production in 2016.

Terminator Genisys will arrive in theaters on July 1.
