Newt Gingrich Goes After Robert De Niro For First Lady Crack [Video]

Shreveport, Louisiana- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wants President Obama to take responsibility and apologize for an offensive joke made by Robert De Niro at a fundraiser for the Obama reelection campaign.

According to CNN, Gingrich told a rally in Shreveport, Louisiana,

“What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong, it divides the country.”

The event was hosted by both De Niro and Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States. De Niro made a crack about the wives of GOP presidential contenders Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

DeNiro asked the crowd,

“Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady? Too soon, right?”

The participants of the event, which was being thrown by the Obama for America gorup, had a short chuckle but Gingrich hit the ceiling. He called De Niro a Hollywood liberal who was so out of touch he probably had no idea that gas prices were high in the first place.

Gingrich went on to say,

“I do want to say one thing, both on behalf of my wife and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney, I think that Robert De Niro’s wrong. I think the country is ready for a new first lady and he doesn’t have to describe it in racial terms.”

The Obama Administration had Olivia Alair, the First Lady’s Spokeswoman issue a short statement about the joke.

Alair said,

“We believe the joke was inappropriate,”
