Kirk Cameron Stands Behind Anti-Gay Comments, Blames Piers Morgan For Creating Hateful Soundbite

Kirk Cameron continued to defend the anti-gay comments he made on the “Piers Morgan Tonight” earlier this month during an appearance on the “Today Show” this morning. The former child star said that he was surprised that his comments created such a controversy because he believes that they are in line with God’s teachings.

Earlier this month Cameron said that homosexuality was “destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” Several people (including his “Growing Pains” co-stars) were appalled by Cameron’s comments. But the child star doesn’t really understand the controversy.

Cameron said:

“I was surprised, frankly, that people were surprised by the things that I’ve said. I have been consistent for 15 years as a Christian. I’m a Bible-believing Christian. What I would have thought was more newsworthy is if I had said something that contradicted the word of God, if I had contradicted my faith.”

Cameron also said that the interview with Piers Morgan was supposed to be about his new documentary “Monumental” and that the host shouldn’t have raised the subject of gay marriage.

Cameron said:

“”What disheartens me… is that when you’re sitting across the table from someone who knows what your perspective is on issues… but to then take some answers, reduce an important and personal and sensitive issue to a 4 second soundbite and toss it into a community to start a political firestorm and really upset people that you’re saying you’re looking to protect, I think it’s disingenuous.”

Morgan responded to Cameron’s accusations today on Twitter, saying that the he “respects his religious beliefs (but doesn’t) respect his use of bigoted, inflammatory language (about) homosexuality.”
