‘X-Men: Apocalypse’: James McAvoy’s Professor X Goes Bald For First Time

Every character in the X-Men universe has their trademarks. Wolverine has his hair (and claws), Gambit has his trenchcoat, Rogue has her hair, and Professor X…has his bald head. There is little doubt that seasoned thespian Patrick Stewart has done a fantastic job of bringing Professor X to life over the course of the past 15 years. To generations of X-Men fans, Patrick Stewart is Professor Xavier. But it was inevitable that his time would come to an end. In X-Men: First Class, we were introduced to a young Charles Xavier, portrayed by James McAvoy. While he carried much of the personality and warmth of the man everyone knows and loves, he had a full head of hair going–not quite the iconic figure just yet.

In X-Men: Days Of Future Past, McAvoy continued on as Xavier with a full head of hair, a perfect foil to the bald figure he becomes in Patrick Stewart’s future version of the same character. Now, with X-Men: Apocalypse, it looks like we’ll finally be seeing McAvoy’s Xavier come fully into the fold as a bald Professor X.

Yesterday, X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer posted our first look at McAvoy going bald for the role.

It was a long time coming for McAvoy. The second he signed on to play the character in X-Men: First Class, he knew the hair would eventually have to go. It’s a fitting time, too. Fox is slowly phasing out the old X-Men universe with this new 80s timeline that was first established in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and we’re unlikely to see Stewart in this last film. With that in mind, it makes sense that McAvoy would come into his own in what will be the final film of the First Class trilogy, X-Men: Apocalypse.

Something else that will be needed in this film is substantial aging makeup. McAvoy’s Xavier was introduced in X-Men: First Class as a young man in the 1960s and was supposedly a decade older in Days Of Future Past, but in order to really sell the character as being a good 20 years older than when he was first introduced, they’ll need to age him up. From the side view we have in the photo, it doesn’t look like any work has been done on his face, but as the caption says, McAvoy’s Xavier look is currently a work in progress.
