‘Once Upon A Time’ Has Officially Been Renewed For Season 5

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Once Upon a Time actor Josh Dallas told KTLA‘s Sam Rubin that the series would begin filming Season 5 in July. But at that time, ABC hadn’t officially announced if the series would, in fact, be returning.

Well, now it’s official. Series creator Adam Horowitz posted on his Twitter page that Once Upon a Time will return.

And even though Dallas accidentally spilled the beans before the renewal was announced, he, too, took to Twitter to express his excitement about Once Upon a Time getting renewed.

Once Upon a Time is just one of many ABC shows to officially get renewed. Some of the station’s other veteran shows, including Scandal; Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; and Grey’s Anatomy will also return, according to Mashable. Many of its freshman shows such as Black-ish; American Crime; and How to Get Away with Murder have been renewed for a second season.

But as Once Upon a Time and other shows celebrate their renewals, some are saying goodbye. ABC has decided not to renew two of its freshman series, Forever and Cristela, and the station is also dropping Resurrection after just two seasons.

News of the renewal comes as Once Upon a Time gets ready to wrap up its current season. The two-part finale airs this Sunday, May 10, at 8 p.m.

Last year, fans got a glimpse of Frozen character Elsa at the end of the finale, which was a set up for the first half of the fourth season. Co-creator Edward Kitsis told TVLine that this Sunday’s episode will set up the next season of Once Upon a Time.

“There is a top-secret scene that I’m shocked hasn’t got out — but there’s still time! We’ll absolutely be setting up what Season 5 will be, but unlike last year where it was, ‘Hey, it’s Frozen,’ or the year before which was, ‘Hey, we’re going to Neverland,’ this one will be much more like Season 1 in that it’s a condition of the show that changes and has ramifications for everyone.”

Prior to the announcement of the show’s renewal, one ABC representative told TV by the Numbers that it was expected that Once Upon a Time would return, even though the show has stumbled in ratings. TV Series Finale reports that the current season of Once Upon a Time has averaged 6.66 million viewers, while the previous had attracted 7.08 million.
