Zoo Apologizes For Naming Monkey ‘Charlotte’ After Public Said It Was Disrespectful To Name Monkey After Princess Charlotte

According to People magazine, Japan’s Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden named a newborn monkey Charlotte. Critics didn’t waste any time saying it was disrespectful to give the monkey the same name as the daughter of Prince William and Princess Kate.

The zoo is considering changing the monkey’s name after the zoo received so many angry calls and e-mails saying that naming the baby monkey Charlotte was an insult to Charlotte, the Princess of Cambridge.

It is a tradition of Japan’s Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden to ask the public to name first-born macaque each year, and “Charlotte” won the poll.

Votes to give the monkey the name Charlotte sky-rocketed after the British princess was named and topped the ballot during the last three days of voting, which ran from March 27 to May 6.

“The name Charlotte received 59 out of 853 votes in the counting for the female monkey that was born Wednesday.”

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was born on Saturday, May 2. Her name was revealed to the public two days later on Monday, May, 4. The monkey at the zoo was born on Wednesday, May 6.

Princess Charlotte is named after her grandfather, great-grandmother, and late grandmother. And the monkey is named after the baby.

The Washington Post reported that the zoo apologizes for naming the first monkey born this year at the zoo the same name as the royal daughter. The zoo is considering getting another name for the monkey.

“We deeply apologize for causing trouble to many people over the naming of the first baby [monkey]. We take these opinions seriously.”

The baby macaque was born Wednesday and named Charlotte after the newest member of the British royal family, the daughter of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. It’s the first monkey born at the zoo this year, and the facility in Oita, in southern Japan, has a tradition of letting the public name each year’s first-born macaque.

According to zoo official Akira Asano, some said the Japanese people would feel offended if a monkey were named after Japanese princesses.

The complaints originated in Japan, and no complaints were noted from British citizens. Asano said the zoo has also received support for Charlotte, and the views are now largely divided.

Officials at the zoo and the city are still discussing what to do with the monkey’s name. Before doing anything with the name, the zoo plans to seek advice from the British Embassy before making a final decision.

Do you think naming the monkey Charlotte was disrespectful and the zoo should change the monkey’s name?
