Pakistan has yet to win a match on their current tour of Bangladesh, losing all three One Day International matches and the only T20, while being held to a draw in the First Test — all coming after a streak of 47 matches against their rivals to the east in which Pakistan lost only once.
But Pakistan now sees its best chance to salvage some dignity out of the otherwise disastrous tour, thanks to Younis Khan and Azhar Ali each posted centuries as part of a 250-run stand.
Khan reached 148 before finally seeing his wicket fall, while Ali remained unbeaten at 127 heading into Thursday’s Day Two action.
“Whenever a partnership comes to the game, you can dominate the proceedings. Myself and Azhar scored 250. It’s all about the partnership,” said Younis after stumps were drawn Wednesday. “The first session tomorrow is crucial for us. We have a good chance to win this game. Whatever score we get will be good for us.”
Bangladesh also suffered a setback when, after winning the toss and electing to bowl on what looked to be a pace-friendly surface, they lost fast bowler Shahadat Hossain on just the second ball of the five-day Test Match, when the pacer fell down during his delivery.
Shahadat came back onto the field and was all set to resume bowling after the lunch break when bad luck struck again. He injured his knee during warm-ups and was carted off on a stretcher, ruled out for the remainder of the Test Match.
If Bangladesh have a comeback in their sights, they’ll have to manage the feat shorthanded.
