Distasteful 9/11 Themed Cake Deemed ‘Political Commentary’ By Austrian Baker, Meant To Ridicule Austrian Politics

A baker from Austria has become the subject of controversy after baking a political themed cake that represents the twin towers being struck by air planes. Meant to be a statement of ridicule against Austrian politics, many believe the cake to be distasteful and should be removed from his bakery. Rather than believe that the cake is offensive to the families of the individuals that lost their lives in 9/11, the baker believes it is representative of “political commentary” and feels that the majority of onlookers will understand his message, and those that do not understand should continue onward.

Thomas Kienbauer is the baker that has claimed international fame for creating the distasteful cake that represents a looming depiction of the twin towers with the planes striking and smoke pouring from the gashes. He feels that the cake is not offensive and most have taken positively toward the message, according to the Bulletin.

“My customers have predominantly reacted positively to my latest creation. I know about the sensitivity of 9/11, and I certainly did not want to ridicule the tragedy.”

He stated that it was not his goal to offend anyone, especially those with a direct connection to the 9/11 attacks. However, he thought it was the perfect comparison to represent the Social Democratic Party of Austria and the Austrian People’s Party, both of which he feels are on cusp of being shaken up in a way that could destroy both parties and coerce the resurrection of newer parties that would be less imposing.

Reuters reported that despite Kienbauer’s attempt at avoiding offense toward 9/11 and the victims, many are very upset at his attempt at “political commentary.” A critic of the cake stated that he would call it an “incitement to terrorism,” whereas another stated, “it’s ironic that a baker has no taste.”

Although the lack of support toward the cake is undeniable and complaints against the dessert are plenty, Kienbauer still sees nothing wrong with prominently displaying the cake in his bakery for everyone to see. He admits that most do not see the cake for the message it is supposed to send forth. However, he has also stated that he has received praise for the message. Yet, despite the intended message and the distasteful image, the cake will remain.

“Most people who see this cake interpret it immediately as lots of people lost their lives and… blah blah blah. Few see the purpose behind the whole thing,”
