‘Star Wars’ Theme For ‘Disney Infinity 3.0’ Comes At Cheaper Price And Ninja Theory Combat Input [Video]

The third edition of Disney Infinity was announced Tuesday and the expected Star Wars theme was confirmed as part of the June Game Informer cover reveal. The original and prequel trilogies are covered, but the most interesting bit may be the developer brought in to upgrade the game’s combat system.

Development of Disney Infinity 3.0 is still being led by Avalanche Software who handled the first Pixar and second Marvel-themed releases. Ninja Theory (DmC, Heavenly Sword) was brought on board to “retune” melee combat. According to Game Informer, this includes “adding depth” for advanced players.

Meanwhile, Sumo Digital (Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing) is also coming on-board to tweak the Disney Infinity racing experience. One of the new Toy Box games is a kart racer so this is right up Sumo’s alley.

Disney Infinity 3.0 - Star Wars

The original Star Wars trilogy for Disney Infinity 3.0 will be followed via the included Rise Against the Empire playset. It will follow Luke and Leia, as they face off against Darth Vader in memorable locations such as Endor, Hoth, and Tatooine.

There’s also the Twilight of the Republic playset that squeezes in the Clone Wars between Episodes II and III. This set was developed by Ninja Theory and follows Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka as they fight the droid army.

Naturally, there will be plenty of Star Wars figures sold separately. Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Yoda are all confirmed so far. There’s plenty of content to mine from the first two trilogies, so expect more characters from the franchise to come via playsets and character releases later.

One thing to watch out for is how Disney Infinity 3.0 will handle new playsets and characters for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The announcement confirms that a separate playset will be available around the same time the movie releases. This falls in line with Star Wars: Battlefront, which releases the Battle of Jakku DLC just ahead of the movie’s release.

Star Wars characters won’t be the only toys available for Disney Infinity 3.0. A Marvel playset featuring Hulkbuster Iron Man, Ultron, and other Marvel characters will be available to take advantage of the huge buzz surrounding Avengers: Age of Ultron. There will also be traditional Disney characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Mulan, and Olaf along with Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron: Legacy.

Interestingly, the Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack will feature the Twilight of the Republic playset along with Anakin Skywalker and Shsoka versus the playset with the original Star Wars trilogy characters. The good news is that starting price was brought down $10 to $64.99. Additionally, the Power Disc packs will no longer be blind packs. You’ll be able to see what you are purchasing.

As for platforms, the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Android, and iOS will all receive releases.
