What’s The Deal With Floyd Mayweather Jr. And The Burger King?

Aside from being known as undefeated, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has also gained a rep for his fight entrances. In his 2006 fight against Carlos Baldomir, he entered the arena as a gladiator perched on a throne. In the next year, during his fight against Oscar De La Hoya, he made a mocking entrance by wearing a sombrero as his opponent is part Mexican. At that time, rapper 50 Cent walked with him while rapping over the arena’s speakers. In 2014 in his bout with Marcos Maidana, he was accompanied by a couple of renowned artists. Walking with him in his entrance to the fight were rapper Lil Wayne and close friend Justin Bieber.

This year, Mayweather did not disappoint as he made another interesting entrance with Bieber and an unlikely addition to his entourage: the King from Burger King. The new member of the boxer’s entourage had everyone puzzled as Mayweather is not exactly a good promoter of a corporate brand.

Over the years, he has gained a bad rep and was even labeled as “the most hated athlete in professional sports.” Despite being unbeaten in the sport of boxing with an unblemished 48-0 record, Mayweather has no endorsement deals because of his undesirable public image. Not only is he cocky and outspoken, he has also been convicted twice of domestic abuse. Preceding his fight, the media has been unforgiving at bringing up that part of his past and all that negative press gravely affected his public image.

With all that put into consideration, many people are wondering: what was Burger King thinking when they paid up an estimated amount of $1 million to be a part of Mayweather’s entourage? Apparently, the fast food chain is keeping mum about the issue.

When asked for an official statement, Burger King just responded, “We don’t call him the King for nothing. (Referring to their mascot)… We do not have anything else to contribute at this time.”

However, there are many who think that the money that Burger King shelled out was all worth it. Online source Bleacher Report seems to think so as they wrote, “Considering it had Twitter buzzing, Burger King has to feel pretty good.”

They also added that “Mayweather may have won the fight, but one could argue Burger King was the biggest winner of the night.”
