EA Talks ‘Star Wars: Battlefront’ World Design, The Game Will Feature A Dozen Multiplayer Maps Plus Additional Co-Op Locations

While building the in-game locations that players will visit later this year within Star Wars: Battlefront, DICE is paying close attention to details to help breathe life into the game and make it feel like a true Star Wars experience. Publisher Electronic Arts revealed on Monday that the developer of Star Wars: Battlefront is looking to faithfully recreate many of the environments from the popular sci-fi franchise.

When it came to designing Star Wars: Battlefront maps based on key locales that were shown in the films, such as the ice planet Hoth or the forest moon of Endor, DICE had a wealth of materials to use for inspiration. However, Star Wars: Battlefront will also allow players to fight on planets that have never before been shown on screen. This presented the developer with a new set of challenges as they had to create new Star Wars environments that fit with the overall style and theme of the series.

To give fans an idea of the level of detail that the team is trying to put inside Star Wars: Battlefront, EA discussed added the volcanic planet setting of Sullust to the game. Since Sullust never appeared in any of the movies, DICE started getting ideas for the setting by researching writings and lore that have been archived at LucasFilm.

Next they visited real world locations, such as Iceland, to take reference photos of similar environments. A Game Informer report states that they also went to the actual locations where certain Star Wars scenes were filmed. Afterwards, DICE concept artist Anton Grandert created initial designs which would later be bused to build the maps of Star Wars: Battlefront.

“With black sharp rocks, huge land shifts, red lava, turquoise lakes, and white smoke … everything to make it really colorful yet imposing and threatening.”

For the first time, EA also revealed that Star Wars: Battlefront will launch with 12 playable multiplayer maps. In addition to Sullust, the game will also include many classic Star Wars locations such as Endor and Hoth, which have both been featured in past Battlefront titles. The publisher also confirmed that the game’s co-op missions, which will take the place of a true single player campaign mode, will offer players even more maps to explore when Star Wars Battlefront launches later this year.

“Of the 12 multiplayer maps in Star Wars Battlefront (there are even more locations when you include the Star Wars Battlefront Missions), some feel immediately familiar — such as the lush forests of Endor or the tundra of Hoth that allow you to re-live your favorite moments from the films.”

Star Wars: Battlefront is scheduled to release on November 17 on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. As recently reported by the Inquisitr, DICE wants gamers to know that they aren’t just giving their popular Battlefield series a new Star Wars skin. They have reassured fans that the upcoming game will have more in common with the old Battlefront titles than anything else.
