‘Silent Hills’ Cancellation Prompts Petition To Continue Much Anticipated Game, Garners 80,000 Signatures In A Week

The highly anticipated addition to the Silent Hill franchise, Silent Hills, which was set to be a collaboration between video game designer Hideo Kojima and famed sci-fi/fantasy/horror director Guillermo Del Toro, and starring The Walking Dead fan-favorite, Norman Reedus, has officially been cancelled.

The cancellation hasn’t stopped one Silent Hills fan, however. Yauheni Zinkevich, a fan of the franchise from Germany, decided to be proactive, and started a petition on Change.org appealing to Kojima and Del Toro to continue Silent Hills, a game that certainly would have reinvigorated a franchise that has been slowly, but surely been fading into irrelevance over the years.

In the Silent Hills petition, Yauheni speaks of his love for the game series, and the “heartbreak” felt by fans worldwide when the cancellation became official, especially after having the chance to play the P.T. Demo, that has now been removed from the Playstation Network.

“Hearing the cancellation of one of the most anticipated horror games is about the most heartbreaking thing horror fans had to swallow this year.

“Since the first sight of the P.T Demo it was instant love, and it burned into the minds of everyone that this had to release at some point.”

With no reasoning for Silent Hills’ cancellation in sight, Zinkevich concludes that perhaps the decision was made due to monetary issues. If, in fact, that was the case, he calls on fans and the game’s creators to crowdfund the necessary funds to make Silent Hills happen.

“Although the reasons are not yet announced I am begging you along with countless others: Please continue the Development on Silent Hills, if the issue is money related, we would love to see a Crowdfunding campaign like Kickstarter to ensure you are getting all the financial help there is! We´d love to see it happen at some point and want to thank you for all the great games you have released so far!”

It’s not only fans who are upset by the abandonment of Silent Hills. When Del Toro first broke the news at a San Francisco Film Society event, he allegedly said “It’s not gonna happen and that breaks my greasy heart.”

Norman Reedus tweeted about his regret in April. It turns out that he was looking forward to lending his likeness and voice to Silent Hills as much as fans were looking forward to seeing him in it.

Reedus also happens to be one of the over 80,000 people who have signed Yauheni’s petition, which was originally set at a goal of 75,000 signatures, but since surpassing that, has recently been upped to 150,000.

If you’re a gamer that was looking forward to playing Silent Hills, a game that Kojima admitted he and Del Toro wanted to create that would “make you sh*t your pants,” head on over and sign the petition. There’s no guarantee that it will change anything, but it certainly couldn’t hurt.
