Westboro Baptist Church To Protest Founders Son During Atheist Rally

The Westboro Baptist Church is preparing to protest an atheist rally in Washington DC where one of the highlighted speakers will be Nate Phelps, the son of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps.

Nate has been estranged from his father for some time now and has spoken out about the physical and mental abuses he suffered for years at the hand of his tyrannical father.

The younger Phelps has risen beyond his family’s hate spewing church to become an advocate for gay rights while serving as an anti-child abuse activist.

Nate Phelps will join world famous atheist Richard Dawkins and other speakers at the Reason Rally which will be hosted at the National Mall in Washington DC next weekend.

Organizer David Silverman, president of American Atheists tells MSNBC that Nate, “brings a powerful voice and story to the rally.”

Silverman adds:

“He shows us all that if you can come out as an atheist in that family, it’s possible anywhere.”

Nate in the meantime continues to speak out about the Westboro Baptist Church which he says was founded so his father could “vent his rage.”

In the meantime his sister Margie Phelps, a spokeswoman for the church says they will picket the event because atheists are a “parade of fools.”

While the Reason Rally is underway other churches will come together for a low-key event known as the “True Reason” demonstration. Church members for the True Reason rally believe that the Reason Rally is attempting to paint a caricature that all churches are like Westboro Baptist Church.

Do you think the Westboro Baptist Church has become nothing more than a punchline for hate spewing ridiculousness?
