Is The Navion Holographic Navigator The Next Generation Of GPS?

The Navion holographic navigator could become the safest way to get where you’re going. What it does is it takes the road ahead of you and uses lasers to paint the windshield with where you want to go. The best part is, it won’t require you to buy a new car with the technology built in.

It won’t stop manufacturer defects from turning your car into a rolling safety hazard, like those on the Ford recall list as previously reported by The Inquisitr. With those vehicles, the doors have a tendency to fly open while you’re driving, and participating dealers are fixing the issue by replacing all four latches for free.

If door latches aren’t your problem, you still need to see where you’re going, and using a device to suggest directions could take your eyes off the road at the worst possible time. One fix could be simply having the directions read out loud for you, like Android’s navigator app does.

Another solution is a device from Swedish firm WayRay, which doesn’t make you look down or turn down the radio to get directions. Still in its prototype phase, the Navion holographic navigator could render all current GPS technology obsolete.

Consumer interest is still waning for the technology, simply because it uses hand gestures to operate, and driving uses both hands to be safe. Combine the navigator with self driving technology, and you could potentially use sensors to see traffic in front of you as well as pedestrians, even if your windshield is covered in frost and snow.

Wired claims that the device currently throws imagery for navigation onto the windshield, much like video games such as Forza Horizon 2, so there is no need to look down and back up. You can keep your eyes on the road ahead of you, where they belong.

The Navion holographic navigator could potentially make driving much safer if WayRay can get it perfected and possibly integrate it with self-driving technology sensors. Don’t depend on it entirely if it gets that far though. Many traffic laws still consider it a violation to drive if you can’t see through your windshield.

If you’re interested in what could end up being the next generation of GPS, WayRay invites you to sign up with their email list before pre-orders start later this year.
